ADULT LEARNING SUCCESS STORIES
Hind – Adult Learner, volunteer at Masbro and Brook Green Children’s Centres and user of employment programme.
My journey with Masbro Centre started in 2014 when I moved nearby. I used to come to Masbro with my children for play sessions, and once they started school I decided to brush up on my skills and started English, IT and maths courses. I found all tutors and staff friendly and extremely supportive, especially at challenging times. I also felt that there were always interesting and useful activities to do, for example Money Mentors, Readers Group, Volunteer training, and Into Work Club.
So far, I have achieved level 2 maths and since my numeracy skills proved strong, I started volunteering as a leader at maths exam revision classes. I also passed level 1 English and currently studying towards level 2. Additionally, I worked with the employment team to identify career goals and decided to qualify in childcare. I’m now studying Early Years Diploma and I’m volunteering at Masbro and Brook Green nurseries to build up experience. I look forward to completing the course and finding a job in childcare.
Hindi did it!
Hindi attended English and maths functional skills courses at Masbro Centre and successfully gained level 1 qualifications in both subjects. Getting these qualifications helped Hindi to improve her skills and confidence. Hindi moved into employment and works in a local school now.
Hindi says: When I applied for my job I had to complete a long application, numeracy and literacy tests and then online health and safety and food hygiene courses. I wouldn’t be able to complete the process if I didn’t go to English and maths at Masbro. I’m grateful to my teachers for their support and I recommend courses at Masbro to all people.
Anything is possible, just ask Thoyeba
Thoyeba joined the employment programme at the Masbro Centre in January. She held undergraduate degree in business administration from overseas and wanted to progress her education further, however she needed to improve her English first.
Thoyba joined ESOL and English courses at the Masbro, and quickly progressed her way up to the highest level, achieving level 2 pass in July. While studying for her final English exams she applied for a place at university to study on a Business Top Up course and was accepted, starting the course in late September!
Thoyeba was extremely happy that she finally was able to reach for her dream career in business, open further employment opportunities and become a positive role model for her young son. Once she completes 1 year of Business top up course Thoyeba is planning to continue her education and study for a Master’s Degree in Business.
It was hard work especially because I have a little son to look after, but I kept my goal in mind and that helped me to stay focused, improve my English and secure a place at university. I am very excited and can’t wait to start my business course!

"I needed level 2 qualification in Maths and English to study childcare. I was so happy to find out that Masbro run these courses in ‘school friendly’ times so I could study while my older children were at school.
While I was attending classes at Masbro, my little son was in the creche there, and loved it. That meant that I didn’t need to stress about him, as I knew he enjoyed his time."

“When I started classes at Masbro I hardly spoke any English, and now after 2 years of going to classes and the Readers Group I’m about to finish level 2 in English!
I’m now confident about writing and speaking, I can help my children with homework and I’m thinking of taking further qualifications. I’ve made great friends and learned about different cultures – I feel part of the diverse local community.”

“I was nervous about studying again but the tutor was very friendly and supportive, and I quickly made friends with fellow students. I’ve improved my English and got a qualification in Maths.
I now feel much more confident about my literacy and numeracy skills and can now to help my children with homework. I also completed a money mentoring course which helped me to manage my finance and save up money.”
